The Language
When you visit O’ahu, do not call the people who live there “natives.” Residents (especially the long time residents) prefer “locals.” Also, keep in mind that local residents of O’ahu use a form of English called “Pidgin.”
Pidgin is a combination of formal English, and slang from a variety of languages including (obviously) Hawaiian and the languages spoken in Asia and in Polynesian cultures. It uses very loose English grammar, often dropping articles, adverbs and clarifiers. Pidgin is spoken quickly and, while most tourist locations are staffed with people who are skilled in varying their native tongue, sometimes a few words will sneak in.
